Architecture and Build Considerations

The design for the Fyansford Courtyard House was deeply influenced by the industrial surroundings, which guided the choice of materials for both the interior and exterior. The aim was to blur the boundaries between inside and outside, with strategically placed windows and sliding doors enhancing the visual connection between the two. The project also embraced the opportunity to design a garden space that could be enjoyed from multiple areas of the house, facilitated by the central courtyard concept.

During the documentation stage, meticulous planning and attention to detail were crucial. This included everything from brickwork set outs to tile set downs and window reveal detailing. One of the construction challenges involved managing the pour of the raft concrete slab, particularly in areas where the exposed concrete finish would be a feature. The design also sought simplicity and minimalism, evident in elements like the custom steel pergola with integrated lighting and the carefully commissioned feature steel-framed glass door.

The Resulting Design

The resulting design of the Fyansford Courtyard House reflects a thoughtful blend of industrial inspiration and residential comfort. The house, though modest in size, is spatially efficient and flexible, allowing for entertaining through open living and courtyard spaces, while also providing zoned areas that can be shut off when not in use. The monochromatic interior is punctuated by deep green wall tiles and terrazzo floor tiles in the main bathroom, echoing the greenery of the central courtyard. The design is not only visually appealing but also functional, with considerations for passive heating and cooling, natural ventilation, and energy efficiency through the inclusion of solar panels and a solar hot water system.
